Mr. Natural's Music School is
located in San Francisco's
historic Haight Ashbury
Founded in 1985, Mr. Natural's Music School brings high quality-low cost music lessons to
the Bay Area. In the beginning, we knew
we wanted to bridge the musical gap
between the musicians who can only read
music and the ones who can only play by
ear. We discovered that the best way to
develop well-rounded musicians who can
play, improvise, read and write music is to
get them to think like composers. After years of experience, we have developed
an entirely new approach to the subject of
music theory and teaching.
What We Offer
Each student's lessons are specially tailored for that student's
interests. We ask them what they want to be when they grow up, musically speaking. After learning the basics for their instrument, a
student can choose to study any style of music. Many students go
on to learn a second and third instrument and are able to apply
everything they've already learned to the new instrument. Ear
training exercises help students to hear rhythms, melodies and
chords so they will be able to write down the music they hear or
How We're Different
We teach music as an art form, and we do it using intervals. An
interval is the distance between two notes. This distance can be
understood in the same way by your eye, by your ear and by your
hand. We use the numbers 1 - 7 to talk about the musical scale,
not ABC or Do-Re-Mi. By numbering the scale tones we can teach
students to play, read, improvise, compose and analyze music. The numbers help to expose musical patterns and songs learned by number can be played in any key or on any instrument.
