All the songs in the "Play Song" section were in the Key of C. In this section we will take the song Brother John and play it in several different keys using the intervalometer. The song is shown below in "Natural" script with words and melody numbers. When you play the song on your instrument and when you play the MIDI file, always sing the melody numbers at the same time. This is good ear training and it will help you play the song in any key.

Brother John Key "C"
Place the intervalometer as seen in the graphic above and you will produce a scale that sounds in the Key of "C." The melody for Brother John is also shown below on the staff in the Key of "C." The song starts and ends on "C", which is the number 1. The melody numbers above and the script below will sound the same.
Now in order to transpose the song into another key, just move number 1 on the intervalometer to a new position. Play the SAME melody numbers in the new position and you will automatically change the song into its new Key. Number 1 will always point to the name of the Key you are in. You can play Brother John in any other Key just by moving the intervalometer to a new position. In the examples below, some numbers will land on black keys.
Try "D" this time. Brother John Key "D"
Try "E" this time. Brother John Key "E"
Try "F#" this time. Brother John Key "F#"
If you have been following up to now you have just played the song Brother John in Four Different Keys! That's all there is to transposing using the intervalometer. Just place the number 1 on any key you wish to play and then play the numbers. Now you are playing in the new Key. It's just that simple. Singing along will be easier if you move songs into a Key that fits your vocal range. To do this, find the lowest and highest notes you can sing comfortably on the keyboard. This is your vocal range. Next, move the intervalometer until the lowest and highest melody numbers of the song fit inside your vocal range. The intervalometer lets you move the Bandwidth (distance between the lowest and highest notes) of any song up or down until it fits the Range of your voice. The number 1 now points to the key you are singing in.
